Javan rhino extinct in Vietnam - WWF

2011-10-25 08:37

Hanoi - A critically endangered species of rhino has been poached to extinction in Vietnam, wildlife groups said Tuesday after the country's last Javan rhino was found dead with its horn hacked off.

The Javan rhinoceros was pronounced extinct in Vietnam by WWF and the International Rhino Foundation (IRF) after all dung samples in a 2009 and 2010 survey at Cat Tien National Park - the only known habitat - were confirmed to have been from the animal.

"The last Javan rhino in Vietnam has gone," said Tran Thi Minh Hien, WWF Vietnam country director. "Vietnam has lost part of its natural heritage."

In a new report, WWF suggests poaching was the likely cause of death for the rhino, which was found in April 2010 with a bullet in its leg and its horn removed in the national park in southern Vietnam, around 160km from Ho Chi Minh City.

The group said "ineffective protection by the park was ultimately the cause of the extinction" and warned that illegal hunting to supply the wildlife trade threatened the futures of other rare animals in the country.

Critically endangered

"The tragedy of the Vietnamese Javan rhinoceros is a sad symbol of this extinction crisis," said Nick Cox of WWF's species programme in the Greater Mekong.

He said efforts to protect natural habitat and deter poaching "were inadequate to save the Javan rhino" in the country and predicted the "continued situation will no doubt lead to the extinction of many more species in Vietnam".

The rhinoceros was believed to be extinct on mainland Asia until 1988 when one of the animals was hunted from the Cat Tien area, leading to the discovery of a small population.

Javan rhinos are critically endangered, with barely 50 individuals left in a single group in a small national park in Indonesia.

WWF said Asia's voracious demand for rhino horn for traditional medicine continues to increase every year, meaning "protection and expansion of the Indonesian population is the highest priority".

The group said other species on the verge of extinction in Vietnam include the tiger, Asian elephant and Siamese crocodile.

Stories like this just depress the hell out of me. Why is mankind so greedy, cruel and ruthless?

If only the people who buy poachers products were made extinct. Forget the poachers, it's the Asain markets that are destroying our natural world. They will soon destroy their continent, then make a more serious effort than they already have to destroy ours.

And if we don't stand together to save our Rhino and other endangered species, including Perlemoen, Leopard, Pangolin, Lions, Elephant from poachers soon we too will be in the same boat. It is sickening that people only look upon these creatures as walking "$$$". Seriously people we are in serious trouble with humankind's greed and need to stop these merciless people in their tracks NOW!

'mankind' they call it, there is nothing kind about us at all, i'm actually looking forward to moving on, just hope i get to go somewhere else in the universe, sure dont want to come back here

Human need will always supercede ecological need , this will continue unabated and will excelerate as we continue to multiple at incredible rates and demand more from the natural world. So sachasea , to answer your question , because we insist on large unsustainable families coupled with superstition .

Another sad example of how human greed has lead to the extinction of another animal. Until pressure is put on those Aisan governments to actively do something about this it will never change. Makes one really depressed

Mankind is not happy until we have destroyed everything... killed everything; breed and populate every corner of the world... so that nothing else can exsist. God, guide us, or sort us out....

      Harald - 2011-10-25 10:08

How dumb have we become... we so intrested in our new cars, cell phones, computers etc, we are completly lost as a race... What depresses me more is that the worlds population of humans has gone from 6 to 7billion in just 12 years, and our destruction of our only home is gaining pace... so sad

And the pity of it is: Rhino horn has no known medicinal or aphrodisiac effects. How depressing. yet another beautiful animal, posing no threat to man, has disappeared for ever.

Some human beings who don't deserve life.

I fail to see how a human with a brain can think drinking powdered rhino horn will give you a better erection. Exercise, drink lots of water, eat healthy and rest when you need to and everything will work as it's intended...

It's no different to a lot of western beliefs that have no scientific basis. When people ask what the danger is in believing BS, here's the example.

  • Sharmay - 2011-10-25 10:22

Look, rhino horn is made out of keratin, the same thing human fingernails are made of. Why can't they use that in their medicine? It's that same bloody thing technically and vastly abundant in their own countries :)

  • Harry Meyerowitz - 2011-10-25 10:31

We as a race should be ashamed of ourselves, we know the problem exists, but we act to mildly and too late, we must let all our endangered animals become extinct, maybe then we will learn a lesson... A hard one at that.

  • Amanda - 2011-10-25 12:04

This would explain why rhino poaching has increased so much in SA. Best hurry along to a zoo quickly, before they are all gone...

  • Simone - 2011-10-25 12:23

Not suprising... first they wipe out their own, then they start on ours!! Bastards - ignorance in the 1st degree!!!!!!!!!! Hope they rot in hell!!!
