Kill a camel to cut pollution

2011-06-09 12:10

Sydney - Australia is considering awarding carbon credits for killing feral camels as a way to tackle climate change.

The suggestion is included in Canberra's "Carbon Farming Initiative", a consultation paper by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, seen on Thursday.

Adelaide-based Northwest Carbon, a commercial company, proposed culling some 1.2 million wild camels that roam the Outback, the legacy of herds introduced to help early settlers in the 19th century.

Considered a pest due to the damage they do to vegetation, a camel produces, on average, a methane equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide a year, making them collectively one of Australia's major emitters of greenhouse gases.

In its plan, Northwest said it would shoot them from helicopters or muster them and send them to an abattoir for either human or pet consumption.

"We're a nation of innovators and we find innovative solutions to our challenges - this is just a classic example," said Northwest Carbon managing director Tim Moore.

The idea was among those accepted for discussion by the government, which is seeking to "provide new economic opportunities for farmers, forest growers and landholders" if they come up with ways to cut emissions, according to the document.

Heavily reliant on coal-fired power and mining exports, Australia is one of the world's worst per capita polluters and the government is looking at ways to clean up its act.

Legislation for the "Carbon Farming Initiative" is set to go before parliament next week.

why cant they export to saudi arabia? ;)

      as.it.is - 2011-06-09 13:39

that was a tongue in cheek post....just for the tree huggers. forget about the gas...its the vegetation that they are destroying more than anything else.

  • Wollie - 2011-06-09 12:36

Shoot them from helicopters? Maybe get a couple of Apache gunships, that'll sort things out. :-)

      DirtyDog - 2011-06-09 15:08

Nice idea, but the carbon footprint of the helicopter might just outweigh the camels! To the bunny-huggers (I don't hug em, I eat em!) remember that these are feral camels that do NOTHING, except produce methane. It is similar to the problem they had with the introduction of the rabbits many years ago. Now they'rea pest and declared vermin. Remember what happened on Gough Island, rats escaping from ships started decimating the birds, so cats were introduced. Now there is an open season on cats!

      FIO - 2011-06-09 19:35

Dirtydog, it Marion Island, not Gough, and it wasn't rats, it was mice. I know, I was on Marion as part of the cat extermination program. And the cats incidentally were wiped out many years ago.

Shoot them, not a bad idea at $1400/h for the Apache and the bullets at $7.50 each and 1.2 mil camels mmmmmmm nope not a good idea....couple of ruffnecks on bikes with dad's knipmes will do a better job

  • The_Realist - 2011-06-09 12:44

it worked on the aboriginal population...

  • Yolande - 2011-06-09 12:49

You must be kidding me. There has got to be MUCH better ways of doing something about polution! But of course the other (really meaningful) ways mean loss of profits, so kill animals and pretend you are doing something about polution. Sick and sad.

      Ntebo More - 2011-06-09 12:52

imagine your parents killing you because you fart too much they can't stand you smell anymore, even plants in the house dies

      Willem - 2011-06-10 05:22

really......really morentebo? Did it take more than 2 seconds to vomit that out onto this post? read-research-consider-post.

      Zion - 2011-06-11 13:53

Morentebo may just have a point. The Human Race, that is you and I are f*cking up this world now we blame the animals and want to decimate them as a consequence of our stupidity. How about rhinos: These buggers and their elephant mates crap, fart and destroy the trees which give us oxygen instead now we must breath in their poop. sis man.

  • Pixie1984 - 2011-06-09 12:53

just export them to the UAE... they can then be tourist camels!

  • Coert - 2011-06-09 12:57

The only valid response to this insanity is: WTF?

  • Stefanus - 2011-06-09 13:00

I'm not from this planet but I think their problem is not the camels. It's the humans. Humans cause more harm to the planet than any other specie. And there are too many of you.

      daaivark - 2011-06-09 13:08

Precisely, as Flash so rightly says. Go out and cull some Aussies.

      Willem - 2011-06-10 05:24

Dude, same as with monrontebo. If thats how you feel, kill yourself, save the planet.

  • Flash - 2011-06-09 13:03

A camel is only responsible for 1 tonne of CO2 per year and an aussie is responsible for 27.2 tonnes... So why are they not culling the aussies?

      Zion - 2011-06-11 13:57

On the other hand maybe it would be a good idea to import the meat and sell it via the chicken outlets.

  • I_Say - 2011-06-09 13:11

Animals (and perhaps in time people)must be culled so that the USA (Who caused all this sh*t in the first place) can carry on burning oil to feed their greedy nation? > I dont see China and the US making any advances in this area..

  • Flinger - 2011-06-09 13:11

How bout 1,2 million corks to plug the camels hole?

  • Justin Schon - 2011-06-09 13:18

I think Humans add more pollution than camels! If we getting carbon credits for killing camels, we might as well give carbon credits to murderers! Now no government will blame their people for the pollution problem??

      DirtyDog - 2011-06-09 15:09

So what do you suggest? Have a one child policy as they have in China? That way we can control the population on the planet. Nice idea.

  • Badballie - 2011-06-09 13:59

Typical, we caused the problem so lets kill of animals to reduce it in stead of curbing our own emissions. time to go see the wizard kids your missing parts

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/consumer/caring/article.html?in_article_id=418338&in_page_id=511 Go read about the Great Carbon Trade Swindle and you will realise that none of the things they claim are for any good!

      as.it.is - 2011-06-09 14:30

my point exactly....people are so gullible

  • Joy - 2011-06-09 14:33

"Heavily reliant on coal-fired power and mining exports, Australia is one of the world's worst per capita polluters and the government is looking at ways to clean up its act." - then perhaps Australians should rather reduce the HUMAN POPULATION - leave the camels alone !

  • sardonicus - 2011-06-09 14:53

The wizards of Oz have a plan! Lets all go out and shoot every methane producing ruminant! That ought to solve global warming! One wonders why they don't shoot people, the useless feeders, who are reproducing and spreading like cancer on this planet. Lets start with criminals and slowly work our way up. Our ultimate future will lie in eugenics, sooner or later.

  • liesl - 2011-06-09 14:58

There's more to it ... "Camels are regarded as one of Australia's worst feral pests. They cause $14 million damage to infrastructure and a number of road deaths, through collisions, each year. Camels also adversely affect native species by trampling habitats and blocking sparse watering holes in the desert." http://fw.farmonline.com.au/news/state/agribusiness-and-general/general/19m-for-camel-cull/1558670.aspx

      DirtyDog - 2011-06-09 15:37

The other feral pest is the rabbits, they even have fences to control their migration. As I said, trust humans to stuff up the environment by introducing species with no natural predators!

      liesl - 2011-06-09 15:57

Yes, and the cane toad, also introduced without taking into account the consequences. Amazing how we screw up our environment. Reminds me of the rabbits and deer on Robben Island, and the prosopis trees that were introduced to the Karoo - all environmental challenges that damage the local fauna and flora. In the end solutions must be found, I suppose, even if they are unpalatable.

      liesl - 2011-06-09 15:59

And really, it took a second of googling to find more comprehensive information. Everything in this piece is meant to be sensationalist, from the heading onwards. Eish.

  • Goeief0k - 2011-06-09 15:30

So basically cammel farts control their weather... nice

      Zion - 2011-06-11 14:01

Ja, I agree. Then we will have the camel effect no longer the butterfly effect.

  • Flamewulf - 2011-06-09 15:54

They should also cull all the cattle, sheep and brumbies.

      Flamewulf - 2011-06-09 15:56

      and rabbits.
