MXit changes look
Cape Town - MXit has changed its look and functionality at the end of June.
"In the first week, more than 1.1 million users downloaded the new-look version and daily registrations of new users on MXit increased by 25% to 60 000 new registrations per day," MXit said.
The social network is on a drive to expand its footprint, and as the cost of smartphones declines, the business model is being evaluated continually.
"People that don't use MXit still think of it as an instant messaging platform, and although we will always retain that feature because of its enormous value to our users, we are proud to say that the evolution of MXit over the last five or so years has culminated in it becoming a serious player in the global social networking space," said Juan du Toit, MXit head of international business development and marketing.
The network has 39 million users and the changes allows users to manage contacts better and an improved search functionality.
To alleviate concerns that the platform exposes minors to risk, users can disable their profiles in public searches.
Parents, however, should be aware that their children are on MXit and advise on safety.
Users who feel intimidated on the platform can access counselling with the MXit Cares service and the education quizzes in mathematics, physical science and life sciences offer help to school children.
MXit has strong South African base and about 700 million messages are sent and received on the platform per day.
