Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Colombia

Washington - A strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck in the Andes mountains of south-west Colombia on Sunday, the US Geological Service that monitors quakes worldwide reported.

The quake struck at 16:31 GMT about 20km east of the town of La Vega and 326km north-east of Quito, Ecuador, the USGS said.

AP reports that Colombian authorities say there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage from an earthquake centred deep underground.

The USGS says the quake struck at 11:31 local time 48 km from the regional capital of Popayan. It says it was centred at a depth of 150km.

National disaster director Carlos Ivan Marquez says there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The regional emergency director, Isabel Hernandez, also reports no damage.
