Washington - US President Barack Obama's re-election campaign team opened a Twitter account on Thursday for his wife Michelle, but it was aides rather than the first lady who sent the opening two tweets.
The @michelleobama account, which aims to capitalise on her rapport with some voters ahead of November elections, was described as "a new way for you to connect with First Lady Michelle Obama and the president's campaign".
Although the account, like the president's tweets, will be managed by aides, any messages that the first lady decides to send herself will be signed "-mo", according to one of the messages sent on Thursday.
The president, who is often pictured with a BlackBerry or iPad, does produce a personal tweet, designated by his initials "bo".
The @michelleobama account had more than 160 000 followers within hours of its launch, but it's short of the nearly 12 million following Barack Obama on Twitter.
The First Lady also issued another personal tweet, calling on Americans to join her in a day of service for Martin Luther King Day on Monday.
