Cape Town - Nasa launched its Atrex rockets on Tuesday.

The US space agency announced on Twitter that the five rockets were launched simultaneously.

"We have liftoff of all five rockets!" Nasa tweeted.

The Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (Atrex) is a Heliophysics sounding rocket mission that will gather information needed to better understand the process responsible for the high-altitude jet stream located about 100km above Earth.

The rockets will release a white tracer chemical that will allow scientists to better study the jet stream by "seeing" space winds.

The jet stream is a high-speed narrow air current that has been measured at speeds of 400km/h.
