Cape Town - Apple has launched the new range of iPod music playing devices and said that they will be in SA soon.

The new range is headlined by the iPod Touch which takes its design inspiration from the recently-launched iPhone 5.

It has a 10cm screen and 5 megapixel camera that records video in high definition and sports face detection with an LED flash.

Apple says that the new Touch is twice as fast as the previous generation because of its dual-core A5 chip, and users should also see vastly improved graphics performance.

The iPod nano features built-in Bluetooth for listening to music wirelessly and multi touch display to make it easier to organise music collections.

Despite higher processing power, increased battery life is claimed for the new devices.

"At 30 hours, the new iPod nano offers the longest music playback of any iPod nano so you can enjoy your playlists and FM radio even longer," Apple said.

Similar to the iPhone, all the new devices have new so-called "Lightning" connectors that Apple says will make charging more reliable and robust.

The iPod touch also features Apple latest iOS 6 operating system that has come under some criticism for its mapping application when the iPhone launched.

Apple had a successful iPhone launch, selling over five million devices within 72 hours, and the launch of the next generation iPad is highly anticipated.

The entry level 2GB iPod shuffle is priced at R599 and the iPod touch with 32GB of memory is R3 199. The 16GB iPod nano has a recommended retail price of R1 799 and Apple said that all the devices should be available at retailers soon.
