New game consoles do it all

Hamburg - Portable game consoles are getting more and more like their stationary cousins.
They are now to the point where they have more in common with their TV set brethren than classic mobile devices like the Nintendo Gameboy.
That's the finding of Hamburg-based computer magazine Computer Bild Spiele, which recently conducted a comparative test of two new models, the Nintendo Double Screen (DS) and the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP).
Nintendo's DS received a grade of 2.29, comparable to a B+, just ahead of the 2.39 (or B) grade for Sony's PSP. Both consoles sell for around $200 (about R1 200).
The reviewers praised both devices for their image reproduction, built-in WLAN adapter, and high resistance to jostling and moisture.
They did complain about the units' weight: 275g for the DS and 290g for the DS, as well as the non-coated displays, which make for distracting reflections and restricted viewing angles.
The fold-up Nintendo DS offers gamers two equal sized displays (6.15 by 4.6 cms). The uppermost screen is reserved for game play, while the lower screen offers maps or serves as a touchscreen.
It is this last function that Computer Bild Spiele feels will allow for new gaming concepts. Up to 16 DS devices can be wirelessly networked for communal gaming. Games from the Gameboy Advance will also run on the console.
The reviewers were impressed with the PSP's "piano lacquer" look, but were disappointed with the single widescreen display (9.5 by 5.5 cms).
One plus for the PSP: The console can also display photos and play back music files. - Sapa-dpa
