New iPad prices for SA confirmed

2012-04-23 11:29

Cape Town - Prices for the new iPad to be released in South Africa shortly have been confirmed by the distributors.

Core Group has announced that the price of the popular Apple tablet will start at R4 999 for the 16GB version with Wi-Fi, up to R8 299 for the 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi and 4G.

Core said that although the next-generation LTE networks are not available in SA, the device will work on local 3G networks.

Apple recently came under fire in Australia for advertising its devices as 4G in that country.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has taken legal action to ensure Apple makes consumers aware its third-generation iPad cannot connect to a 4G mobile data network in Australia due to technical incompatibility.

The company has offered consumers a refund over the misleading advertising.

Apple has remained aggressive with the pricing of the iPad, despite claims that the device is more expensive to build due to its high resolution screen.

Research firm IHS iSuppli said in March that a model with 32GB of RAM and a cellular modem costs $364.35 to manufacture, 9% more than the corresponding iPad 2, which cost $335 to make a year ago.

The aggressive pricing of the iPad makes it harder for competitors to grab a share of the market. Apple announced in March that it had already sold over three million of the tablet computers since the global launch.

The latest generation iPad launches in SA on April 27.

Yep, R2000 more for 3 added features.... One of which, isnt even compatible with our cellular networks. I said this in a previous article on the new iPad, and all the apple fans gave me a nice blasting, with the usual self-affirming assumptions and insults of course.

And quite rightly so. Seems you still haven't learnt. Pity.

Enjoy your 4g connectivity Irene :D

Kinda hard to spend over R5 000.00 for it, only to find that you can only have limited south african apps. Waste of money

      Brad - 2012-04-25 11:43

Make a US or UK account........?

This is like reading an article from the dark ages. The new iPad has been in SA for at least 2 months already - same spec etc as the ones from Core (the so-called “Authorised Distributor”). OK – so I paid a small premium from iAlley.co.za (still cheaper than the other guys and no waiting list like the iPad 2 from Core) to have the latest iPad but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Still you get the same warrantee and awesome accessories (I have a Bluetooth keyboard – it rocks). Yes, the apps in SA are rubbish, but there are multiple ways to get around getting ALL the apps and music to your iPad. Prices at the alternative importers will probably come down soon as well (in response to Cores “launch”) but buying from the alternatives won’t have you waiting in line for Core. If it wasn’t for the alternatives I wouldn’t be an Apple user.

Core is absolutely useless. How can they take so long to "launch" in Sa.

      CraigColinRoyMcLeod - 2012-04-24 21:02

Marshal has spent far to long in the Apple Reality Distortion Field, Forbes listed IOS as far less stable, and my Android Tablets run circles round my IPad.

Don't hate the player. Hate the game. Not Apples fault the networks are so dodgy in SA. It's a premium product. Not other tablet matches the iPad ability. Sa is so far behind.

The old Ipad 2's are going for the same price locally, am I missing something??

  • Liz - 2012-04-24 21:07

I am equally excited about the launch of the new Ipad but the level of service and knowledge at the Apple store at Clearwater Mall is shocking. I was in there today, They are the most clueless bunch of shelterd employees on the planet, I have learnt more about the Ipad from News24 and the roll out. Why is there such a hype of secrecy and lack of service for customers. I have opted now for the Samsung Galaxy, no hidden frills or secrects ... those clowns at Clearwater took a bite out of the wrong Apple with me. Good luck to all that purchase the new Ipad ... cant say that I would be dependent on after sales services should anything go wrong with your new tablet.
