Next Apple iPhone gets slimmer screen

2012-07-17 16:20

Hong Kong - Apple is expected to unveil a new iPhone later this year with a slimmer screen thanks to updated touch-screen technology, a report said on Tuesday.

The next generation iPhone, referred to by fans as the "iPhone 5", is being manufactured by Asian component makers, Dow Jones Newswires quoted unnamed sources as saying.

Its panels will use "in-cell technology" integrating touch sensors into the LCD, it said.

That makes a separate touch-screen layer unnecessary and reduces the screen thickness by about half a millimetre, Dow Jones quoted DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase as saying.

The new technology will also boost displayed image quality, and help Apple cut costs as it would no longer have to buy touch panels and LCDs from separate suppliers, the report added.

It said Japanese liquid crystal display makers Sharp and Japan Display as well as South Korea's LG Display were currently mass producing panels for the next iPhone.

Apple is widely expected to launch the device in the third quarter of this year, around 12 months after the release of its hugely popular iPhone 4S - the firm's first new product following the death of co-founder Steve Jobs.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the report or the next iPhone's release date when contacted by AFP.

The report came amid heated competition from rivals such as Samsung, whose flagship smartphone the Galaxy S III uses a 4.8-inch (12.2cm) screen that is thinner than the current iPhone.

Apple posted a $11.6bn profit in the first three months this year, led by record sales of iPad tablet computers and iPhones - the latter surging 88% year-on-year.

Yawn ... Apple had better bring something better to the table than only a thinner screen. Android is gaining and overtaking rapidly. But ... the Apple zealots will buy again and again. They like to be screwed by the big A. S3 for me thank you very much.

Yea agreed, I'm a big iphone fan but I'm getting bored with it, you can only milk a product so much. I had a hands on with the S3 and was blown away, they are light years ahead of the iphone, apple you better have something awesome planned or else.....

You obviously haven't tried working on an iPad or using an iPhone.

Android has already overtaken Apple in the Mobile Market you moron. Probably lead Apple by more than double. Even Samsung on its own is leading Apple. TBH Apple will fail because just like Mac vs Windows, apple is failing to cater for a diverse range of hardware like Microsoft did and now android is doing Apple still holds on to its crown Jewel ; The iPad. Nothing even comes close to the iPad. I really hope Apple does wonders with the iPhone 5. Good competition = happier customers.

OKAY....they are saving costs....BUT WAIT....the iPhone will probably cost 20% more than the overpriced 4S!!!

Apple could bring out a turd-shaped iPhone and there will be people queuing to buy it. ;-)

      Mark - 2012-07-18 09:02

They will justify it by saying 'the design challenges traditional concepts of ergonomics and is also making an ironic statement about consumerism - you don't think it's good because philistines like you just don't get what Apple is trying to do with this bold, excrement inspired design revolution'. Hipsters/Apple Fanboys would buy it in droves.

Samsung has only surpassed iPhone sales because they have more variety. They make really cheap crappy phones aswell. If you take ONLY the Galaxy range against the iPhones, i bet it would be a different picture... Im not bashing samsung, i think their phones are great, im just saying that people are getting bored with apple, but they forget the fact for them to get bored, they have been exposed to apple technology for years which is only being surpassed now... Apple is the most valuable company in the world, and that is for a REASON. I think that they are gonna slap samsung in the face with the Iphone 5... They know they have to step up their game, and thats what they intend to do...
