Johannesburg - Sony will not be cutting the price of its Playstation 3 video game console (PS3) in Europe but will offer free games and accessories instead, reports the BBC.
This means that South Africans will have to pay the full price for the console because South Africa forms part of Sony's European operations.
Last week, Sony announced it would cut the price of the 60-gigabyte version in the US by R700.
Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, thinks the price cut would more than double sales of the console in the US. A new 80-gigabyte version will be sold at the old price of about R4 200.
Sony said last week at the E3 video game conference in the US that the PS3 in Europe would include two games and an extra set of controls worth R1 200 .
The 80-gigabyte version of the game will only be available in the US and Japan.
In South Africa, the 60-gigabyte version of the PS3 costs R6 600, R3 000 more than its nearest local competitor - the Xbox 360 Pro-console.
