Oil taints Durban beaches

2011-11-30 11:22

Durban - Pockets of oil have surfaced at beaches north of Durban, the New Age newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Residents reported seeing oil on the shores of Zinkwazi, Salt Rock, Zimbali and Blythedale beaches, the paper reported.

These were near Sheffield Beach, where the ship MT Phoenix was stranded in July.

The paper quoted SA Maritime Safety Authority executive head Sobantu Tilayi saying they had received a report of a ship leaking oil nearly 580km offshore. Rough seas may have washed the oil to the shoreline, he said.

My question is why are these ships running aground - Do the Captains / Pilots know what they are doing?????? Clearly they are out of their depths if they can't operate the radar etc.... Shocking that the vessel is still there and not sorted out yet..... COP17 - we can't have this happening now.

      richard.hipkin - 2011-11-30 12:28

      What are you talking about???

      Gungets - 2011-11-30 13:27

@Wendy - the Phoenix has been gone for ages and did not leak any oil at all. As you can see on the "Related links" tab the Phoenix has already been scuttled. Also - given the rabid thirst of News24 for clicks on their pages, someone might have knocked over a can or 3-In-One on the beach, News24 has turned it into the world war 3 of environmental catastrophes. And don't worry about the delegates at Carp17, they are too busy buying chinese made curios on the Durban beachfront to worry about banal things like oil pollution, they are far to busy and important for that.

Maybe this can be seen as a good thing (I know it isn't especially as it impacts the health of people and the environment) because it is this event that would show delegates, from all around the world, of some of the many short comings of crude oil use

Profanity is the crutch of the intellectually disabled.

      Gungets - 2011-11-30 13:51

Koos - as said to Wendy, the Phoenix is long gone. The oil, depending on how much of it there is, did not come from there. It is also not known how much oil there is. Relax boet, by the time you get here for your Christmas the very, very efficient municipality (seriously - when it comes to tourism, they are very good) up there will make sure you can burn the skin off your body without worrying about oil.

you can add La Mercy to the beaches; I was covered in oil on Monday morning

      Gungets - 2011-11-30 14:27

@Kevin - have tried phoning mates who live in Ballito and on Sheffield Beach. How bad was it at La Mercy on Monday. Durban is clear, nothing here at all. To be that widespread it has to have been spill, or a tank flush and it must have been quite far out.

      Gungets - 2011-11-30 18:52

Just got word. Looks like a ship at anchor flushed it's "empty" bunker tanks. Ballito a bit of a mess, main beach and Grannies got oil. Hope they take samples and track the bastards. Not that much of a task to clean it up, just costs money and is as irritating as hell. And criminal.
