Old message in a bottle found

London - A message in a bottle deposited in the sea almost 100 years ago in a scientific experiment has set a new world record for the length of time spent at sea, authorities in Britain said on Thursday.

The bottle, released in 1914, was caught in the net of a fishing vessel off the Shetland Islands, on the north-east coast of Scotland, in April 2012.

Its nearly 98 years at sea beat the previous world record by more than five years, the publishers of Guinness World Records confirmed.

Drift bottle 646B was released as part of a batch of 1 890 on 10 June 1914 by maritime scientists measuring under-currents of the seas around Scotland.

So if I was stuck on a deserted island and put a note in bottle for someone to rescue me it would take a hundred years. Better late then never I guess.

      And 1890 bottles.
