Singapore - Computers may be more vulnerable to attacks by fast-acting worms and mass-mailing viruses this year, security specialists warned on Monday.
Wong Loke Yeow, Singapore-based analyst at TruSecure Corp which conducted the study, forecast "significant damage to those unprepared".
US-based TruSecure provides risk management products. Its study is based on data from the Wild List Organisation, a listing of viruses for which vaccines are not yet available, as well as its own research.
The predictions were published in The Business Times.
"Macro viruses continue to rapidly decline in their prevalence and impact, while Trojans and mass mailers continue to rise in frequency," Wong said.
TruSecure expects a "big event" this year causing at least $1bn in damages, he added.
The study forecasts more mass-mailing viruses, which use standard executable attachments, while viruses in the wild also increase. - DPA
