Peta: Pope must truly go green

2011-06-25 14:44

Rome - An animal rights group has urged Pope Benedict XVI to "truly go green" and insist that the next popemobile is made without leather.

Peta said it has written to the pope with the request following the Vatican's confirmation on Wednesday that Germany's Mercedes-Benz auto company is making a study of a hybrid, energy-saving popemobile.

The car would replace the current Mercedes vehicle used when the pope travels abroad.

Peta spokesperson Ashley Gonzalez says leather production is not only "toxic to the environment, it's also hell for cows."

The letter, which is dated June, 22 and also sent to The Associated Press, said Peta counts many Catholics among its members and suggested that a leather-free car could "help the environment and prevent animal suffering".

The Vatican press office said on Friday it hadn't seen the letter and couldn't comment.

Benedict has made conserving resources an important concern of his papacy. Vatican officials say a green popemobile would be a sign of his efforts to promote sustainable energy and take care of the planet.

When he is outside the Vatican, Benedict usually rides in a modified white Mercedes-Benz outfitted with bulletproof windows. It has room for two passengers in addition to the pope, who sits on an elevated chair to wave to crowds.

Through the years, a number of different models have been donated to the Vatican.

Peta you should be a real retard. You eat meat but won't use its by-products? Why not campaign for whole world population to be vegetarians first? It seems your priorities are aimed at being a populist?

The pope should be glued onto the roof of his holy karriejie and sprayed with quick-drying, green, lead-saturated, enamel paint.

Yes Ashley, imagine all those cows walking around without skins, just so people can have cars with leather seats,or shoes,or handbags. Must be hell! What a winger you are! Never eaten a piece of meat, or drank milk, or eaten an egg???? Are you not just trying to get your name in the papers by chance? Wake up, Ashley, the cows are dead!!!!! They were slaughtered for MEAT! Leather is only a by-product!

You cant argue with these idiots. Its easier to give birth to a Giraffe than to try and explain to them what the world is about. PETA = PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS..... What PETA dont tell you, is that they had to put out hundreds if not thousands of cats and dogs in 2008-2010 because they spent all their money on stupid TOI-TOI's.

Gen 1 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." There you are he has got a license to use leather seats.

  • Gerrit - 2011-06-25 17:47

Maybe the pope went green when he read Ashley's article. I know, I did, around the gills.I felt like vomiting.

  • John Paul - 2011-06-25 19:56

The making of leather products makes income to rural areas. There are plenty of cows willing to sacrifice their body to human kind, giving milk, meat and leather produts - like my shoes. I thankfully accept their sacrifice.
