Record prem baby survives

2011-04-23 18:33

Berlin - A German woman gave birth to a one-pound baby after only 21 weeks and five days of pregnancy, making it the world's most premature baby to survive, the mass circulation Bild newspaper reported on Saturday.

When Frieda was born on November 7 she measured 28cm and weighed only 460g.

Five and a half months later, she is finally fit to leave the clinic in Fulda, western Germany, in the next few days, now weighing 3.5kg and 50cm, the paper said.

Her twin brother Kilian died a few days after being born.

Professor Reinald Repp, director of the paediatric clinic, could not be reached on Saturday, but a doctor on duty said that "there is no foreseeable risk of after-effects for the moment" and that the little girl "should develop normally like any other child".

Repp told Bild that her survival was "a miracle" because generally babies born before 22 weeks have no chance because their lungs, heart and brain are not sufficiently developed.

"Frieda was kept in a completely sterile environment, with her breathing assisted and fed through her navel," he told the paper.

Any baby born before eight months of pregnancy is considered premature.

Very premature babies (less than 32 weeks) are considered at high risk of suffering developmental problems.

It is, she and all those who cared for her, they have with God's Grace, performed a miracle. May she have a happy, superbly normal life. Blessings to her and her parents.

Yip, God's grace, nothing to do with the advanced medical care she received. In actual fact she would have made it on her own, completely unlike her twin *sarcasm*

I wonder what will happen when they finally save a baby that was born under 20 weeks gestation... the legal limit for abortion? Will they start calling abortion at that age infanticide then, like it deserves to be?

      Sipho Sibiya - 2011-04-25 08:50

Ummm, the legal limit in SA for an elective abortion is 12 weeks.

      Poaul Zwarts - 2011-04-26 07:37

Nope, 0-12, weeks no questions asked. Between 12 and 20 weeks, if the mother proves that it will have a significant impact on her... Now what baby doesn't have a significant impact? Hence, "legal" until 20 weeks...

this is just absolutely incredible, and what a miracle!! This story has touched my heart because my twins were born at 27weeks only weighing 410g (Morgan) and 720g (konnor). As a result of premature birth, but mostly due to such a low birth weight, Morgan has Cerebral Palsy, but I have never seen a child with more determination than Morgan. She is 3 years old but undresses herself just fine with just the one hand, and she started walking around 2.5 years!! Preemies that survive turn out to be such incredible people. All the best to Frieda!!
