Scammers hunt for new victims

Johannesburg - SMS and email scammers, ever on the lookout for new gullible victims, have taken to luring people to part with money or their personal details with false promises that they have won a fabulous prize.

"The minute you are requested to incur costs of whatever nature in lieu of what has been promised, should be sufficient warning that something is not right with the transaction," said SA Banking Risk Information Centre general manager for commercial crime, Susan Potgieter, on Thursday.

"The public should be wary of any promises of easy money; the sweeter the deal sounds, the more likely it is part of a scam."

Known as "advance fee fraud", tactics include asking the supposed recipient of a grand prize to send the code number of a cellphone recharge voucher, or asked for money, or for personal details.

The notices usually appear convincing, but Potgieter reiterated what banks keep telling people: Don't part with personal details by SMS or email and don't give personal details to people claiming to be from the bank or a company you do business with unless you are absolutely sure the person you are dealing with is to be trusted.

People who realise they have been duped, or suspect they have been duped, should contact their bank immediately.

Some red flags to look out for:

  • Be cautious of any official or business dealings where the main means of communication is a cellphone number or email. It is very rare for a well established company to use cellphone numbers as its main contact details with the public.
  • Verify that the email address from which the email is sent is that of the company that it purportedly comes from.
  • Be suspicious when you are requested to incur any costs disguised as "administration fees" or "processing fees".
  • Always act with caution when you are suddenly informed that you have won a prize in a competition that you have not entered.
  • Query the reasonableness of a well established company requesting you to send them cellphone recharge vouchers. The probability is that the cellphone airtime that you send is actually used to defraud even more unsuspecting people.

A recent scam dressed itself as official communication from LG Electronics.

The company immediately sent out an alert that the SMS was part of a scam and not linked to the company.

Many of these scammers are smart and creative people, if only they would realize that if they used half of their smartness and creativity on honest projects they could have been stinking rich a very long time ago. Yes scammer, I'm talking to you, you are waisting your time on childish nonsense while you could have been driving a BMW 5 series.

With most of these scams, you have to be an idiot to fall for it. If you get an SMS saying you have won $3.2 million, you know it's a scam. And if they tell you that you have to e-mail someone called Mrs. Harris, and the e-mail adress is something@@hotmail.co.hk, you are 100% sure.

"Your number has been selected as a winner in the UK lottery" Why on earth would anyone give that much money away to random people? If you don't ask yourself that question, you're deserve to be scammed

So much of this is going around and I wonder how these people actually sleep at night (or perhaps that is when they do their "work").

ABSA Western Union 7/30/2010 10:53:31 AM
Western Union is a payment option on the ABSA website and their is is constant scam from them via e-mail. ABSA neglect to warn their customers against this scam and I can only assume that they know that this scam is driven from inside ABSA. I had 3 sca(u)m e-mails from them and notified ABSA more than once and still, no response from them or any effort to warn their clients !!!

My favourite scam is the mail telling you that you've won the UK Lotto, but the mail came from a gmail account!

And who says Fran that they are not driving a BMW 5 series already and a Porshce. You are being so presumptuous thinking that the scammers aren't making lots money and easily than you can imagine. You probably think we live in a world where bad people always get what's coming to you. well reality is bad people often get away with it. Prime example Mugabe? where is his punishment...in the "afterlife"??

Not sure how many people are aware of another scam - not via email or SMS but in person. My husband, a contractor was approached at Malls tiles by a guy showing an interest in his bakkie. Although the bakkie is/was not for sale, he glibly said that he is willing to let it go for R30K..and the response "yes, i want it" My husband told him to call him back when he is ready with the money thinking that he will not hear from him again, but no, he called 3 over the weekend to confirm that he is still interested and on Monday he called from the bank to say he is sorted. Long story, short...it ended up "selling diamonds, a Mr Mohammed, flashing R100K as a deposit for the diamonds and the seller refusing the R100K and all this was to make it look like the real deal" All he was thinking of was "who is going to buy my bakkie then" but it ended up where they asked him for "security" or his bank/credit card before they collect the "rest" of the "diamond" money (approx R450K) He nearly beat the two guys up when he realised that they were wasting his time and were not interested in the bakkie, but in HIS MONEY?... i dont know whether these details above makes sense, but i would like to warn others about this! We can laugh about it, but someone else might have been scared and tempted to part with their own money and are afraid to speak up!

The main reason for easy pickings in SA is that we are a greedy lazy people who think that money comes easy. As for the email scams it is well and good that banks say do not repond to emails when they are happy to send email receipts and such. The latter they charge through the nose.
