Cape Town - Internet users continued to experience disruptions to their connections on Wednesday, as Seacom had trouble resolving the problems on the cable system.
The Mediterranean section of the SEA-ME-WE 4 submarine cable system, which Seacom uses to connect to London, had a fault on April 14 and the repair was scheduled for April 17, but delayed until April 24, the company told News24.
"However, due to ongoing maintenance activity on another cable network servicing Africa and poor weather in the Mediterranean Sea, the actual work only began on Sunday 25 April 2010 resulting in the Seacom service experiencing interruptions from around midday on Sunday," company representative Frederic Cornet said.
The repair work has been hampered due to the weather and users in SA experienced problems in connecting to the internet, even though some reported that the connection appeared to be working properly.
Internet service providers have routed some of their international traffic through the SAT3 cable while repairs continue.
"The repairs will be finished by midnight (on Wednesday)," Seacom head of product strategy Suveer Ramdani told News24.
He said that there was speculation that a ship anchor caused the outage, but added that there would be an investigation into the circumstances around the interruptions.
