Skype goes mobile in UK

London - UK cellphone operator 3 and internet company Skype have launched a handset that will allow UK customers to make free internet calls outside the home.
Customers on 3's UK network will be able to use the Skypephone to call Skype's roughly 2.5 million UK internet telephony users using the mobile device, which uses a 3G handset.
Until now, most Skype calls have been made from computers attached to fixed-line internet connections.
The phone will be launched on November 2 in 3 Stores across the UK and will also be sold over Skype and 3 websites ahead of the key Christmas selling period, the companies said.
The 3 Skypephone will also be launched this year in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden, the companies said.
The handset was developed by Skype and 3 in partnership with Qualcomm, the statement added.
Cellphone operator 3, is owned by Hutchison Whampoa Ltd and Skype is owned by eBay Inc.
