Smell wards off ticks

Hamburg - Giraffes apparently ward off ticks with a smelly odour, the German edition of National Geographic reported in its December issue.
Californian chemist Bill Wood has found eight chemical substances in giraffe hair of which some give-off the smell that apparently deters the ticks.
Giraffe bulls have a distinctly sharper smelly odour, apparently as a sign of their sexual potency, the report said. - Sapa-DPA
