Smoking orangutan to kick the habit

2012-07-06 20:00

Jakarta - Tori is a teenager with a bad habit. The 15-year-old orangutan has been smoking cigarettes at an Indonesian zoo for a decade, but she's about to go cold turkey.

Zookeepers say they plan to move Tori away from visitors who regularly throw lit cigarettes into her cage so they can watch and photograph her puffing away and exhaling smoke.

Taru Jurug Zoo director Lili Krisdianto said on Friday the move is aimed to protect four endangered orangutans at the 14-hectare zoo in Solo.

Results of a medical test are expected on Saturday to determine how much Tori's smoking has affected her health.

A mesh cover will initially be placed over her cage, and she'll later be moved to a small island away from the public.

WTF - why leave it for so long. Zoo keepers should have put a stop to it years ago.

(Perhaps News24 allows me to comment on stories relating to orangutans) Yes Dawn they should have. Especially because they are such a highly endangered species. My guess is the zoo did not act much earlier because Tori became famous and thus was deemed good for ticket sales.

yes they should've taken his lighter away years ago.
