Sony launches NXT Xperia S in SA

Cape Town - Sony launched the NXT series of smartphones in South Africa on Thursday at an event in Braamfontein.

The device is focussed on entertainment and Sony's mobile division, now Sony Mobile Communications, is working to more closely align their offerings with Sony products and services.

"Now, as part of the Sony group, we are in an even stronger position to bring connected entertainment experiences to consumers around the world, and to bring these experiences to market even faster," said R├╝diger Odenbach, vice president at Sony Mobile Communications Middle East and Africa.

The NXt was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier in the year and the device is touted to create "seamless connectivity between all devices whether smartphone, TV, laptop or tablet".

The technological ecosystem that Sony has built aims to allow users to consume and share content across any linked device and this should go some way to differentiate Sony products in a crowded Android market, currently led in sales by Samsung.

The flagship Xperia S smartphone has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 12 megapixel camera and Sony says the device can take a picture within 1.5 seconds from standby with its Exmor R sensor.

Other models in the range, the Xperia P and Xperia U, have slightly underpowered processors at 1GHz, but all devices have the Bravia engine that should deliver a decent display.

The Xperia U can be personalised with exchangeable caps and the SmartDock is offered with the Xperia P to allow multiple screen connectivity.

All devices can deliver HD video and when the Sony Entertainment Network launches in SA, users will have access to premium content from Sony across all shared devices.

"We are very excited for the launch of the Xperia S in South Africa. We have had a great global response  and we are confident that the local consumers will be just as enthusiastic and positive about this device," said Christian Lonne, head of sales at Sony Mobile Communications Middle East and Africa.

Sony is ramping up the competition with Android rivals and the price of the Xperia S has been cut relative to previous models.

The Xperia S has a recommended retail price of R5 999 and pricing for the Xperia P and Xperia U, which will be launched in SA in June 2012, is not yet clear.
