Cape Town - Tremendous opportunities awaited if Table Mountain was voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille said on Tuesday.
"We have the privilege of one of the most breath-taking landscapes on earth, a country of sublime natural beauty," De Lille said in a statement.
"If Table Mountain is officially recognised as a natural wonder, it will cement that unique offering to the world. Tremendous benefits await us if we all do our part and come together."
Western Cape tourism MEC Alan Winde said on Monday if Table Mountain were selected as one of the seven wonders, South Africa could see tourism surge by around 20%.
This would generate an additional R1.4bn in revenue every year and support employment for around 11 000 people.
Table Mountain failed to make it onto the campaign's latest top 10 list released this week, but the top 10 could change because voting only ends on Friday.
This list comprises the Dead Sea, the Grand Canyon in the USA, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Vietnam's Halong Bay, Jeita Grotto in Lebanon, Jeju Island in South Korea, the Indonesian island of Komodo, Puerto Princesa underground river in the Philippines, Sundarbans delta at the mouth of the Ganges river, and Italy's Mount Vesuvius.
