Johannesburg - Telecoms group Telkom launched commercial WiMAX services on Tuesday, the first operator to offer the longer distance wireless broadband in the country, it said.
Telkom said its WiMAX product suite Do Broadband Wireless will target customers who do not have access to ADSL broadband services via their telephone lines.
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is able to beam the Internet and other data over kilometres rather than within a single home or office, allowing for high-speed internet connectivity and file downloads.
Telkom said its WiMAX offering would expand the group's existing broadband footprint in a country where fixed networks are patchy.
The group said WiMAX prices would range from R240 for basic access to R479 for a connection with a monthly cap of 3GB of data.
Its new rival Neotel is also developing a WiMAX network.
