Cape Town - Vodacom has announced that Shameel Joosub will be appointed new group CEO after current chief Pieter Uys steps down next year.

"Shameel Joosub is currently the chief executive of Vodafone Spain. He was previously the managing director of Vodacom South Africa and a director of the Vodacom Board from 2000 until 2010 prior to his transfer to Vodafone Spain," the company told News24.

Uys joined the mobile operator in 1993 and was appointed managing director in 2001. He was responsible for the rollout of 3G services across the network.

He was appointed to the top job in 2008 following the departure of Alan Knott-Craig who has since moved to Cell C as its CEO.

"We are grateful for his vision, leadership and commitment over the past two decades. I am also delighted to welcome Shameel back to Vodacom," said Vodacom chair Peter Moyo.

Uys was reserved about the reason for his departure, and it is unclear whether there are cooling off terms following his exodus.

"It's now time for change, and I will leave Vodacom confident that the business will prosper under Shameel's leadership," Uys said.

Joosub will take over the reins from September to smooth the transition. He faces growing competition from operators and users demanding higher speed networks.

"Vodacom is an outstanding company, and I'm truly excited to be rejoining the team. The business has gone from strength to strength under Pieter's leadership, providing a robust platform for us to deliver world-class products and services to our customers," he said.
