San Francisco - The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences has awarded the BBC three Webby Awards for best news, sports and education sites on the internet, organisers said on Wednesday.
Other notable winners of the prizes, which are often called the online Oscars include search site Google, which won awards for best practices and best services, while The Onion won the humour category and Apple's iTunes won the prize for the best music site.
Reflecting the borderless quality of the internet, many international sites came away with prizes from the ceremony on Tuesday night.
French site Colette at www.colette.fr won for Best Fashion; Japanese site www.raku-gaki.com won for Best Personal website; The German site www.map24.com won the Best Technical Achievement while another German site www.carstuckgirls.com was named the Best Weird site.
"This year's Webby Awards winners are changing the way we live in ways big and small - from how we listen to music to how we elect a president," said Tiffany Shlain, the founder of the awards.
The Webbys were founded in 1996 as a way of honouring the best of the web.
Nominees are selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, whose members include internet co-creator Vince Cerf and Oracle chairman Larry Ellison. - Sapa-dpa
