San Francisco - Apple sold a record 1 million units of its new iPhone 4S on the first day the device went on sale, the company said on Monday.
The record-breaking one day sales figure came despite widespread disappointment that Apple did not introduce an all-new iPhone, rather than keeping with the design of the existing iPhone 4 and just upgrading some components.
However, industry watchers said that sales were lprobably boosted by the massive media coverage of the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on Wednesday, less than two days before the iPhone 4S went on sale.
The previous sales record of 600 000 was set by the iPhone 4 in 2010.
"We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing.
"The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."
