16 000 ride Rea Vaya daily

2009-09-15 20:14
Pretoria - Sixteen thousand commuters use the new Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system daily, the City of Johannesburg said on Tuesday.

"The statistics indicate that Thokoza Park is the busiest station in the mornings, with approximately 1 900 commuters using the station to travel to destinations along the trunk route during peak time," said Rehana Moosajee, the city's member of the mayoral committee responsible for transport.

"The second busiest station is Diepkloof Station with about 1 400 commuters recorded every morning."

Moosajee said in the afternoons, the two busiest stations were the Art Gallery Station with an average of 1 300 commuters, and the Carlton and Library Gardens stations with more than 1 120 commuters each.

The city has launched a campaign, running from September 14 to 30, to encourage commuters to give feedback on ways to improve the Rea Vaya system.

"We are basically in a testing phase with Rea Vaya as this is the first system of its kind to be introduced and not without its challenges.

"We are, however, serious about improving Rea Vaya and delivering a seamless public transport system to our commuters..."

Commuters can SMS suggestions to 33422 during the campaign period and stand the chance to win R500 in cash.

The BRT system was introduced on August 30.
