Johannesburg - Three youths were sentenced to 37-years each by the Eastern Cape High Court in Bhisho on Friday for gang-raping a woman in front of her family, the SABC reported.

Passing the sentence, Acting Judge Shylock Ndengezi described the actions of Khotso Matloporo, Sivuyile July and Siyawandisa Mbovane as "barbaric" and "inhumane".

He said they not only raped the woman in front of her family, including her disabled husband, but also stabbed the husband and forced him to watch.

Ndengezi said the youths, aged 18 and 19, showed no remorse throughout the trial.

He said their young age helped them escape a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
