SA announces HIV drugs partnership
SA announces HIV drugs partnership

The South African government has announced a joint venture to reduce the cost of anti-retroviral drugs with a Swiss company.

Johannesburg - A seven-day hunger strike by Aids activists outside the offices of pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline in Midrand ended on Wednesday.

The strike by members of the National Association of People living with Aids (Napwa) was part of their "Seven Days Black Christmas" protest, aimed at forcing pharmaceutical companies to provide anti-retroviral drugs free of charge.

Some of the activists experienced diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and opportunistic infections due to the lack of food, SABC radio news said.

On Wednesday, they were taken to various hospitals for medical attention. The hunger strike was aimed at highlighting the plight of those living with the disease.

Napwa's action was also aimed at forcing financial institutions to stop discriminating against those living with HIV/Aids, and they wanted the government to introduce uniformity in allocation of social grants.

Francois says... Afrcans to remain what, makatika? The unfortunate part about writing about history is that it is written by the victors. Allow me to quickly site one example: At the end of WW1, Great Britain blocked Germany's sea trade that led to approx 250 000 people in Germany dying of hunger. That is usually not told as part of the reason why Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles. In SA, there was a war between various peoples and not only between racesm but also tribes. The Afrikaner who makes out a big part of Mulder's constituency, which he must represent in parliament, had great grand fathers who fought a war of attrition against Great Britain. The fact is that in SA, there was a negotiated settlement on a war that actually never formally existed and that settlement drew the line at 1913. History can now not be written by a victor, because everyone won in 1994, however the ANC allowed people like Malema and even Nkwinti to very recently to state something else that what was agreed in the settlement. Whether Mulder's facts are correct or not does actually not matter, but it should be seen as the antithesis (makatika, you may need to consult a dictionary on that one) of the populist slogans that "white" people stole our land. Those "white" people are long gone dead. It is the same to say that Poland stole the Danzig from Germany at the end of WWII. The fact is we need to deal with it and work together, otherwise the 1996 Constitution will become our Treaty of Versailles. Read the article...
