Aids fund 'running out of money'

2011-11-28 15:08

Johannesburg - The Global Fund to fight Aids, TB and malaria is in financial crisis, HIV groups warned on Monday.

They said this was expected to have a severe impact on Southern African HIV programmes for treatment and prevention,

The groups, which include South Africa's Budget Expenditure Monitoring Forum, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and Doctors Without Borders, met in Braamfontein to highlight the problem.

Doctors Without Borders described the announcement by the board of the Global Fund as "shocking".

The Global Fund's money woes left it with no choice but to cancel its round 11 of new grants allocated to various programmes in a number of countries.

This held the risk of running back the clock on the gains made in the fight against HIV.

Donors scaling down commitments

The board had said the financial problems were mostly because of donors scaling down on commitments and not releasing funds promised to the fund.

A panel comprising representatives from South Africa, Swaziland, Malawi and Zimbabwe shared their countries' plight in the light of the round eleven grants cancellation.

"It is going to be a disaster if the programmes are not supported," said Safari Mbewe of Malawi.

Sikhulu Matsengwa of Swaziland said the people were worried about the effects if they should run out of antiretrovirals.

TAC's Nokhwezi Hoboyi called on the South African government to take leadership in urging international donors not to pull out of the Global Fund.

She said the country stood to carry the burden of a number of neighbouring country's citizens who would flock to local public hospitals for treatment.

Hoboyi said the TAC had been hosting demonstrations outside the embassies of various countries in South Africa to urge them to keep their commitments to the Global Fund.

The problems more than likely lies with the various politicians more concerned with lining their pockets than caring for their people. That being said, we as human beings need to accept resposibility for our actions. If your going to have sex with anything that moves then be prepared to suffer some nasty disease.

Why don't you stop begging other countries and start using your own money on HIV prevention instead of parties, fancy planes, obsolete military equipment, corrupt arms deals and huge politician salaries. South Africa, a land of beggars and now turning into a begging country, not cool. Start by prevention, that will save money. Make a local contributory aids fun, and put money into television programs to ask locals to donate.

@disliked truth. where you copy paste that from? mmm... GTFO! *urban dictionary it i dare you!!!!!!!!

      Paul - 2011-11-28 16:38

@VanillaSky it is a Global Fund it has nothing to do with the SA government. It is funded mainly by Pharmaceutical companies and western governments promoting investment in developing countries. South Africa nows buys it's ARV's from the Brazilian state company and as such the need to contribute to the Global Fund is no longer sustainable. TAC's executive, who are mainly foreigners, were paid by the likes of Aspen which will not be the case as of January 2012. Brazil are currently building a pharmaceutical factory in Mozambique which will be operational next year.

@Disliked_Truth: I actually read through the article twice to make sure I didn't miss it, however NOTHING you stated above has anything to do with the content of the article. NOTHING. The black people at the bottom of the food chain are oppressed, you are entirely correct there. What you're not saying, and is seemingly unprepared to acknowledge, is that the oppressors are the current ANC government. Don't believe me? If you were to take all the money the ANC government (and associates, like Shaik etc.) have stolen from the people, give it to honest contractors, and get them to build houses for the poor, then more than 60% of those people would have been housed by now. And please, the oppressed are not blameless, alla "we will breed you out of South Africa"... ever heard of: I can't afford to have more children, because I can't afford them?? What you want in 'racial equality and justice' the rest of the world calls 'stealing and genocide'. Lastly: unless I missed a huge part of history, Apartheid only had a 40-odd year run. The other 319 years blacks lived alongside whites, chose to be what they wanted to be, whether it was a farmer, laborer or anything else they wanted to do, given their skill set. Land was bought from them, not stolen.

@Kala: BTW, I’ve never caught TB or Malaria from sex!

      Nicholas.Spaggiari - 2011-11-28 17:22

Paul actually it has a lot to do with SA government. Because they are not doing much about it in the first place... secondly I know first-hand that governments and countries like Australia have huge foreign aid funds that are going towards the aids problems like in South Africa etc. That is aussie tax payer money... I don't know so much about the pharmaceutical side of it tho...

      Paul - 2011-11-28 17:34

Vanilla I take your point but I don't believe TAC promotes 'safe sex' but want handouts for their sexual urges.

      Randomhero6661 - 2011-11-28 16:18

Humans the cause of it all!

      Maai - 2011-11-28 16:48

@Dickless_Twat Whites never achieved wealth through stealing. They earned it through hard work, education, refraining from overbreeding etc etc. Why can you not grasp this concept?

      Heibrin - 2011-11-28 17:10

@Disliked_Truth: 'you state that the white guy was cheating, stealing and killing all the chips'; you do realize that blacks were the first to attack and kill whites, not the other way around? That blacks like Dingaan were the first to cheat and steal from the whites (not to mention slaughtering them), not the other way around??

      Paul - 2011-11-28 17:37

@Heibrin you are a uneducated moron, read your recorded history prior to 'Skiet Piet's' demise.

      Heibrin - 2011-11-29 01:15

@Paul: instead of calling me an 'uneducated moron', why don't you tell me what in my post is untrue, and correct it? Present facts, don't play the man.... unless you have no facts?

  • vaughn.l.jacobs - 2011-11-28 15:35

.....uuummmmmmmm ; maybe if they sell some of their "asset" (the big black beamers and mercs , etc, etc...) they can get some money back for important things like; Xmas holidays and first class flights; who knows ?!

      Tokkie - 2011-11-28 16:53

you are so right AND they must promulgate BIRTH CONTROL.

      Well said Iwan.

  • Paul - 2011-11-28 15:52

Because developing countries are not buying ARV’s from your global pharmaceutical companies anymore. TAC you are the architects of your own demise.
