The South African government has announced a joint venture to reduce the cost of anti-retroviral drugs with a Swiss company.

Johannesburg - The Aids Consortium's interim committee said on Tuesday it was looking at freezing almost R4.5m in donor funds following allegations of mismanagement and financial irregularities.

"Probably the best thing for us to do is to speak to the banks and freeze these funds," interim committee spokesperson Themba Mabuza said in Johannesburg.

He said the Aids Consortium received R400 000 in September 2003, R3m in December 2003, R40 000 in January 2004 and R1m in February 2004.

It has been rocked by allegations of mismanagement of money and the improper dismissal of senior executive members.

The consortium is a non-profit organisation made up of about 1 000 bodies.
