Cape Town - The HIV counselling and testing campaign (HCT) had reached over 14.7 million South Africans by the end of June, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini said.

Of this number, 13m were tested in public health facilities, she told a media briefing in her capacity as chair of the social protection and community development cluster of ministries on Tuesday.

"The significant achievement this campaign has attained in one year is indicative that we are slowly restoring public confidence in public health," she said.

"We have the chance for the first time in this country to create a unified, coherent, and effective public awareness on HIV and Aids, and our aim is to build on the success of this campaign."

The health department would champion a major initiative to improve the health of women and children.

A key element of this initiative was significantly reducing HIV mother-to-child (MTC) transmission rates.

Empirical evidence suggested that the transmission rate had significantly dropped from eight percent to 3.5% nationally, she said.
