Pope condemns Aids bias

Aids experts launch 'CNN of virology'

A new digital media service will foster the global collaboration of physicians and help them to share the latest advances in Aids and other virus research, its promoters say.

Rome - Pope Benedict XVI condemned discrimination against people with Aids, ahead of a December 1 World Aids Day promoting awareness of the pandemic.

"I very much hope this circumstance will foster... commitment to avoid all discrimination against those touched," said the pope during his weekly Sunday Angelus blessing in Saint Peter's Square.

The pope also encouraged the Roman Catholic Church's "multiple initiatives" to fight the pandemic.

His statements come amid debate within the church about whether or not to sanction the limited use of condoms, considered a key weapon in fighting the spread of the virus.

Blood transfusion

The Vatican condemns all forms of contraception except abstinence, and disapproves of condoms, even for Aids prevention.

Still, certain clerics back their limited use in certain conditions - such as when one member of a couple has contracted the virus through a blood transfusion.

The Vatican's key Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is expected to give its view on a new proposal on the use of condoms, but the pope will have the final say in the matter.

malcolm.molver says... Thanks Sipho for proving my point. What an undignified and racist response that was! I detected even a threat of violence in there? In addition, your level of intellect is shocking. Have you even considered that perhaps I was too young during the last days of apartheid? Let me educate you- I was seven years old when Madiba became president! 7 Sipho. I never benefited from what was an evil regime. Furthermore, I said that Zuma is the worst president we've ever had due to the striking similarities between today's ANC and the Nazis. Both persecuted the minority and made them feel unwelcome and both had a militant youth wing to attack the minority. The similarities are alarming. But I don't expect you to realise that. In fact, I expect an attack from you. You see Sipho, the very democracy that the ANC fought for, is the same one they are tearing down now! Read the article...
