SA announces HIV drugs partnership

The South African government has announced a joint venture to reduce the cost of anti-retroviral drugs with a Swiss company.

Johannesburg - The FIFA World Cup provided lessons on how to deal with the HIV/Aids pandemic, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said in Vienna on Sunday.

"I want to believe this sporting tournament has provided all of us with lessons we can apply in our collective approach to deal with the HIV and Aids pandemic," he said at the 18th International Aids conference.

"One of those lessons is the importance of teamwork even in the battle against HIV and Aids."

Another lesson was the setting of targets, milestones, roles and responsibilities to achieve goals.

Motlanthe said the World Cup had emphasised the importance of inter-dependence and co-operation.

United response

He told delegates that South Africa had embarked on a huge HIV testing and counselling campaign to get the population to know their HIV status and act accordingly.

Motlanthe said South Africa had made progress in key aspects of national response with programmes such as the prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

The conference heard that anti-retroviral treatment was provided to over 80% of diagnosed mothers.

"We need renewed commitment for consistent, sustained and predictable financing mechanisms. I would argue that now is not the time to disinvest in health. We are pleased that the Global Fund has invested 10.5 trillion US dollars into the response thus far," he said.

He said the most important lesson was that "our response needs to be united."

frank.hartry says... Every single member of parliment of ALL political parties is stealing taxpayers money in this manner. They all receive 80 free flight tickets a year and an extra R200,000 constituency allowance above their massive salaries and gigantic tax free perks. But they then falsely claim money to drive their own cars. I spoke to a DA MP over xmas who told me this. He also said that the MPs do very little work and it is 'money for jam' for doing nothing. He also said that if one does attend parliment in Cape Town most MPs spend most days in the restaurants and bars of parliment eat and drinking free on the taxpayers. He himself is an ordinary MP drawing a small R85.000 per month plus massive tax free perks but he has businnesses and spends half his time earning money outside of parliment. Let me emphasise that this is a Democratic Alliance MP that i am referring to. Read the article...
