1994:

  • Parliament adopts new internationally acclaimed constitution
  • Gay rights recognised
  • Bafana Bafana wins African Cup of Nations
  • Penny Heyns wins 2 gold medals for swimming at the Atlanta Olympics
  • Josiah Tugwane wins gold at Atlanta Olympics for the marathon
  • Cathy O'Dowd becomes first South African to successfully ascend Mount Everest, with Ian Woodall being the first to summit

  • TRC Hearings begin

    1998:

  • Mandela's 80th birthday
  • Mandela marries Graca Machel

    1999:

  • Second democratic elections

  • Mike Horn circumnavigates the globe along the equator

    2000:

  • Millenium celebrations
  • Mandela lighting candle on Robben Island
  • Zanele Situ becomes first black athlete to win gold at Paralympics - won it for javelin throwing

    2001:

  • Hansie Cronje is implicated in a match rigging scandal

    2002:

  • Nkosi Johnson speaks at World Aids conference in Durban
  • South Africa hosts World Summit on Sustainable Development
  • Launch of the African Union in SA

    2003:

  • South Africa hosts the Cricket World Cup
  • Natalie Du Toit wins medals at Commonwealth games with one leg
  • J M Coetzee wins Nobel Prize in Literature
  • Walter Sisulu dies
  • Hestrie Cloete wins Female World Athlete of the year
  • Mandela hosts the 46664 Aids Awareness concert in Cape Town
  • Sibusiso Vilane becomes first black African to climb Mount Everest
  • Mandela's 85th birthday
