In the news: Fired as Deputy Health Minister

At the beginning of the year Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge had a relatively low profile among the general public.

In August Madlala-Routledge was fired by President Mbeki after she failed to seek permission before going to Spain on an official trip. She was popular among Aids activists and within the government. It was widely believed that her dismissal was tied to a clash with Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.

In December Madlala-Routledge came in at number 33 on the ANC national executive committee list, far ahead of Tshabalala-Msimang at 55.
