Zuma decision hailed as 'progressive'

Johannesburg - A small band of protesters against the rape and abuse of women have welcomed the Johannesburg High Court's decision to refuse a discharge for Jacob Zuma on a rape charge.

"It would be wrong for us to say this case is over but I think there is a victory from the perspective that it is important for rape survivors to hear what the accused has to say," said Carrie Shelver, a spokesperson for People Opposed to Women Abuse (Powa).

Zuma is accused of raping a close family friend at his home in Johannesburg on November 2.

"We must note that this judge is thinking in a progressive way. He is well read ... and is really showing himself to be on the right track," Shelver told the group.

They then broke into an impromptu dance and hugged one another.

Zuma's supporters were also briefed on the outcome of the application as they gathered outside the court within a police cordon.

The trial continues on Monday.
