2011-05-24 11:56

Johannesburg - Former Johannesburg finance boss Parks Tau is the city's new mayor, the ANC in Gauteng announced on Tuesday.

Kgosientsho Ramokgopa - Tshwane

Mpho Nawa - West Rand district municipality

Simon Mofokeng - Sedibeng district municipality

Greta Hlongwane - Emfuleni local municipality

Calvin Seerane - Mogale City

Maphefo Letsie - Merafong

Sylivia Thebenare - Randfontein local municipality

  • Limpopoist - 2011-05-24 12:12

These guy does not have any finance qualification as per link below, since his life he only employed by ANC. I see alot of Trouble coming our way...maybe I should relocate to limpopo

      Smindlo - 2011-05-24 12:21

you got what you deserve Joburg people. more sh@t on the way. this is the guy who was "CFO" who created the billing mess...dont complain

      Mucaine - 2011-05-24 13:48

They have a natural qualification to steel. It wouldn’t be a bad idea if all the white, coloured and Indian people refused to pay their rates until such time things improve. Then they’ll see where their salaries actually comes from.

      Che - 2011-05-24 13:52

@ smindlo get ur facts right before spewing rubbish. parks was never CFO - he was the political head of finance. do u know that trevor manuel doesn't have a finance qualification? i guess it doesn't matter 'cause he's coloured.

      Smindlo - 2011-05-24 14:04

@Che, stop talking kak, this Tau boy was the equivalent of a DG in Manuel's case. his political head was the Masondo boy.

      aluwaninone - 2011-05-24 14:25

just because his education qualification are not listed on who is who sa it doesnt mean he is not qualified....e.g Kgomotso Sebetso has a hons degree in jounalism but its not listed on his profile!!!

      Che - 2011-05-24 15:01

@ smindlo how can an ELECTED official be equivalent to a DG? clearly, u have no idea how local government works. but i'll be patient with u as i'm in a generous mood today. the CFO of the City of Joburg is a highly qualified African lady by the name Mankodi Moitse. Parks was a member of the mayoral committee responsible for finance and Amos Masondo, the mayor. This means he was a member of Masondos cabinet, if you like, responsible for finance. Get it now???

      johncarlos.biza - 2011-05-24 20:15

You guys got it wrong. Tau's studying towards an MBA for heaven's sake!

      Che - 2011-05-24 20:23

true, Parks is qualified and highly intelligent as well.

  • sainsaudi - 2011-05-24 12:12

What does he mean by transformation? Transform from what to what? What about simple pledging to the people of Johannesburg that he will usher in a new era of good, open and transparent governance which serves the people of the city and does not squander money on lavish parties, expensive jaunts abroad and self-enrichment of the ANC elite. As the former finance boss of the city, he will have a good idea about where the money is, so what's there to prevent him and his cronies from looting the city's coffers?

      The Observer - 2011-05-24 12:43

transformation from roads full of potholes to no roads at all.

  • Thorn - 2011-05-24 12:12

Let's wait for the skeletons to come out. I have yet to see an ANC leader do something other than for themselves. My prediction is that if there are any improvements it will be to boost ANC brand loyalty and image, and not for the sake of the people.

      Mucaine - 2011-05-24 13:52

They don't give a crap about the services. The money is coming in from the rate payers, they are getting their huge salaries and that is all that matters.

  • smashly - 2011-05-24 12:13

      DeonL - 2011-05-24 12:30

I think he meant that you must be joking if you think it will be fixed soon. He wants to transform more.

  • Almaki - 2011-05-24 12:16

So the man who was in charge of finance and planning during the billing crisis is now the boss of the whole municipality, and has already made clear that service delivery and effective governance are not his top priorities. Fantastic.

  • Sledgedarkwatch - 2011-05-24 12:18

At least there's some DA brains in there - oh no oops my mistake : )

what makes you think DA won't be corrupt if they win? you don't know that, they behave like angel, when the time comes they throw away their wings , it happens to all political parties not just ANC so No party has a brain

      DeonL - 2011-05-24 13:02

Ntebo, the DA did a great job in Cape Town and most people (61%) thought so too.

      Martin-John - 2011-05-24 13:51

Ag please Ntebo. Why do you think the ANC so desperately wanted their corrupt hands on Cape Town??????? The DA will always run clean governments and in cases where some of their members tried to enriched themselves, they were quickly dealt with.... So think again about your comment !!!

      emile.marais - 2011-05-24 19:33

Before everyone shouts Ntebo More down he has a valid point. The DA needs to keep its books clean for political survival at the moment but this could change. No country on this Earth is free of corruption.

Or is he going to transform council from "light black" to "dark black"?

I do not support the ANC but maybe...... just.... maybe we should give the guy a chance. He might surprise all of us and pull that filthy City right as it was when led by the Nationalist Government.

  • Sello - 2011-05-24 12:56

It appears to me that his priorities are skew. If transaformation is now a priority for the city, i ask myself what Masondo was actually doing for the past ten years. It also tells me that he perhaps didn't agree or support the former mayor's plan. As the former finance boss, he was busy paving the way for himself to take over. He is implying that he was not part of the failed administration under Masondo's watch, Or the ANC is implying that. They should have brought someone who is more qualified for the job. Someone with a track record. I have litte confidence in this new mayor.

  • Darkie - 2011-05-24 13:00

I don`t mean to be racist, but I wud love to know why are all these mayors black? There tons of white competent cadres in the ANC....**Shocked**

      burtfred - 2011-05-24 14:26

Tons of competent white cadres in the ANC? Really? Who are they?

      Che - 2011-05-24 15:21

i'm also interested in knowing why the DA's federal council is almost exclusively white. And why Godzille appointed a whites-only provincial executive committee for the Western Cape government? "I don`t mean to be racist, but I wud love to know why are all these mayors black?" because the majority of the people who voted for the ANC were from black communities and there's need for leaders who understand the conditions there.

      emile.marais - 2011-05-24 19:56

The majority of their electorate is black so it makes sense. What's the big deal anyway?

      Point Blank - 2011-05-24 20:45

The big deal is that the ANC are the first ones to point fingers at the DA about their "white" leaders, but hey it's ok if the ANC appoint only black leaders right?

      emile.marais - 2011-05-24 21:16

I didn't say that. It's ANC propaganda and typical of their hypocrisy. I don't expect them to appoint white South Africans anyway, so what is the big deal if their leaders are black? Maybe I'm being naive but I do except the fact I'm a minority in this country and don't expect my race to be represented all the time.

  • Taurusaurus - 2011-05-24 13:06

8 of them look like corrupt "underdogs" right off the bat. I don't even need to ask WHY their records are so bad; that's the way the ANC likes them. Corrupt thieves with "skeletons in the closet" to blackmail them with. Useless ANC!!

  • Che - 2011-05-24 13:06

Congrats to Parks, I have no doubt he's the best men for the position. As for Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, i doubt he'll finish his term - watch the space! He's the most undeserving of the candidates.

  • Papsak - 2011-05-24 13:10

@Smindlo, Parks was not CFO of Joburg, he was MMC for Finance? Do you know the difference between the 2? My daughter is in Grade 3, she can explain this thing to you. Shout if you are interested.

      Smindlo - 2011-05-24 13:53

you would have known what quotes mean if you were not average. He was Finance Manager, which in the coprporate world is equivalent to financial director.

      Che - 2011-05-24 15:10

@ papsak this is clearly beyond his small head. he just wont get it that Parks' role as MMC was to provide political oversight to the finance portfolio and that's in no way equivalent to being manager/director. And he still thinks he's not below average when he can't get his head around such a simple concept.

  • John - 2011-05-24 13:11

Delay in naming Mayors was probably due to "horsetrading" as to who could offer the best kickbacks by way of tender irregularities.

      Charles N - 2011-05-24 16:14

I agree with you that people should be given a chance. Sadly, Parks and various others have had many chances and has managed to screw most of them up. Whites are their dispicable enemy. Coloureds and Indians don't feature on their list. How often does the ANC address the issue of why their tri-party meetings are black only, as opposed to their pressure on race quotas in sport for example? It seems that the ANC does not want other races to enter their political structures.

      MacTheBoer - 2011-05-24 14:59

Just more evidence of their total lack of commitment to their own stated values of a non-racial democratic South Africa. Where are the demographics we need in business? Is there no charter for mayoral appointments?

Johannesburg what have you done to deserve this??? Transformation is his top priority - meaning transfer wealth to me and my cronies and let the reason why we are here i.e. to serve, be ignored and not even mentioned. What a joke!
