Voter turnout highest ever - IEC

Pretoria - Voter turnout for the 2011 local government election was the highest ever for the municipal vote in South Africa, IEC chief electoral officer Pansy Tlakula said on Saturday.

"I am pleased to announce that the voter turnout is 57.6%," she said at a ceremony announcing the results of the poll.

South Africans broke the trend of voter apathy in local polls, prevalent across the world.

Citizens turned up in their numbers to cast their ballots in one of the most hotly contested polls the country had seen.
