THE recent cold weather sent us digging in the back of cupboards in the hope that we actually owned a jersey. For many, the rain showed us the new holes in the roof and apart from our fashion sense being shocked into a new reality, the weather has shown us another side of ourselves, completely.

The rain and snow that have fallen throughout the country are essential for the replenishment of the water reserves and from an ecological perspective, winter is a critical part of the cycle of life. But for sun-loving beach-goers – it’s just bad weather.

It is a reminder that we can’t have the one without the other, something that our modern lifestyle really needs to be reminded of.

We need to stem the tide of popular thought that strives for the perpetual improvement, winner takes all, failure is not an option lifestyle, and be reminded that in life there is a time for everything.

We have to live the hot and the cold days and not long for the hot during the cold and wish for the cold during the hot, we need to live each moment for what it is worth. August brings the “winds of change” and I do hope that this year, for all of us, we as a community, embrace and deal with the everyday issues of our daily lives that we might embrace what is and be part of the change for better.

The tourists come for what we have, beach and sunshine, but as community we live with who we are, a people seeking to find ways to live together in harmony and uniting together to build our home, for us and our children. A hometown we can be proud to be part of come wind or rain.

We’ll get to wear jerseys for a week or two to come and then they will be forgotten again, but let’s not forget the lesson learnt – you have to put on the things necessary to deal with what life throws at you. You have to clothe yourself with a good attitude, compassion, mercy, righteousness. Let’s build our community by putting on the right things to make our home a better place for us all.
