Eskom relieves residents

ETHEKWINI customers can breathe a sigh of relief as National Energy Regulator (Nersa) rejected Eskomand#039;s price hike proposal.

eThekwini Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo said he is happy that Nersa, on 29 June, rejected the application made by national power utility Eskom to increase electricity prices to 25.3% for 2015/16 financial year. Nxumalo said the country is under immense strain as a result of the energy crisis and our city is working hard to minimise the impact of load shedding to eThekwini customers. “We recently convened a round-table discussion with all affected businesses and stakeholders to ensure business continuity and reduce the impact of load shedding on productivity and employment creation. The city has always been opposed to Eskom’s submission for further increases of the electricity tariff and fully support the decision made by Nersa to reject the price increase request,” said Nxumalo. The city’s message to customers is - be smart, save electricity – it is the wise thing to do for the sustainability of our city. Nxumalo also called upon business to invest more in renewable energy to contribute additional generation capacity to the grid. - Supplied
