Fifa debacle an eye-opener for SA voters

2015-07-08 06:00

THE recent debacle surrounding the $10 million payment or alleged bribe by the South African government is another eye-opener for all South Africans who have voted for this corruption.

Instead of uplifting sport or the basic needs of the poor, the ANC government chose to squander more than R120 million on futile expenditure.

The perpetrators ignore the plight of the poverty-stricken masses and choose to uplift communities in the West Indies, which I believe is hogwash. The deep-seated corruption in this government goes unabated and voters continue to be fooled by the ANC that their vote is for democracy.

The fact that there is no accountability in government starts with the rot at the top and millions of rands are funnelled for favours. The World Cup left behind white elephants in the form of underutilised stadia, except for a few that are being used.

The country benefited from the exposure only for a short while and the fame and glory were quickly eradicated by the scourge of crime, violence and of late, xenophobic mayhem. Obviously, nothing is for free in South Africa and if we dig deeper we will find that the bribery scandal is huge. I hope that the FBI has a good case and the people involved in the bribery scandal are sent to jail.
