GOKUL Primary School pupil, Taytum Shae Singarum, was placed first in the Grade 4 category of the 2015 Local History Museum Passbook Tour competition that ran from April to September.

The competition was organised by the eThekwini Local History Museum Trust and is open to all schools in the Durban Metro area.

Pupils are required to visit three local history museums, including the Bergthiel Museum and the Cato Manor Museum.

The aim of the competition is to expose pupils to the importance of history as a subject, as well as acknowledging the lessons that can be learnt from studying the past.

They learn about the history of Durban and how lives were affected by apartheid, especially the carrying of passbooks.

After pupils visited the museums, they were required to create a poster outlining their experiences. They also qualify for a “passbook”, which entitles them to visit the museums again.

Pupils and teachers were invited to a prize-giving ceremony at the Bergthiel Museum.

Certificates of participation were given to schools and prizes were given to winners and runners-up in each grade, from Grade 4 to Grade 11. This is the second consecutive year that pupils from Gokul Primary emerged winners in this competition. - Supplied
