THERAPY through animals is gaining ground in Amanzimtoti and as a result Oakleigh Funeral Home, which has registered healing dogs, has established a mobile office.

“The therapy is a service offered to the community for free because we care,” owner Henry Bro said.

“We go to old-age homes once a month where our patients interact with Lesley, our registered healing dog. Patients respond well and the homes have recognised the change. Last week we were called out to a patient who was not responding to medical treatment or to the personnel. Once the lady touched Lesley, she started smiling,” Bro said.

He added that it is important that the dogs must be registered healing dogs and they can even go into the intensive care unit on doctor’s recommendation and have done so in the past.

Schools also use Lesley as therapy for autistic children. “One child responded after just 10 minutes - we were all in awe,” Bro said.

Besides therapy, Henry’s dogs participate in dog shows and recently entertained pensioners at the Golden Oldies games. According to Bro, dog agility is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and Italy recently hosted the World Agility Championships.

Anyone interested in using their services can contact Henry on 031 205 9959.
