IN May the Isipingo Youth Forum was established - an initiative by SAPS Isipingo.

The forum is made up of pupils from the three schools - Reunion, Isipingo and Strelitzia Secondary. The youth committee consists of 36 pupils who represent the schools. Their first project was set for Saturday, 27 June, an Isipingo beach clean-up, in line with the “Safer Cities” and “Clean and Maintain my City” projects. Various departments from the Durban Municipality partnered with the youth, including South Durban Basin - ABM, South Durban Basin - Education, Aquatic Safety and beaches, parks and recreation.

The youth gathered at the Reunion Aquatic Centre at 8am. They were given rakes, gloves, masks and bin bags from the South Durban Basin and started their clean-up from Sapref going towards the river mouth and 56 bin bags were collected.

At the river mouth they were given refreshments and then met at the Pavilion and were addressed by the role players. Educational talks on maintaining a clean environment were given by “Clean and Maintain my City”, South Durban Basin, storm-water management and the Isipingo projects committee. They were also entertained with songs and poetry by a pupil.

South Durban Basin handed out environmental magazines, pens, rulers, water bottles, T-shirts and other items to pupils.

“I express my gratitude to those who attended. The Isipingo Youth Forum endeavours to carry out such uplifting projects in future. There was such a positive youth spirit displayed on Saturday. It is undoubtedly motivating and inspiring. Together we aim to shape our future,” said chairperson of the Isipingo Youth Forum, Omaira Jajbhay.

Captain David Ragavan, SAPS Isipingo communications officer said the object of the first project was to:

- create awareness on pollution and its effect on the environment;

- develop active participation and youth involvement in social matters; and

- develop partnerships.

“This was achieved and it is good to know that they have the ability to arrange such projects and carry it through. SAPS Isipingo will do all to assist and sustain further endeavors of the youth forum.”

To end the day, the youth gathered on the beach for a game of volley ball which Isipingo Secondary won. - Supplied
