TWO pupils from Rising Sun JKA Karate Academy in Amanzimtoti were awarded their KZN Development colours. Matthew Maree and Nathan Mileham competed at the KZN Development Tournament (for junior belts) on 19 July in Tongaat, and Maree won bronze for kata and silver for kumite and Mileham won silver­ for kata.

The pupils then competed at the national development championships on 24 July in Durban against Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State and KZN karateka. Maree is a Grade 3 pupil at Amanzimtoti Primary and won silver for kata and bronze for kumite in his seven-to-nine-year division. Mileham is a Grade 10 pupil at Kuswag Hoër Skool and won gold for kata in his 14-to-15-year division­.

Sensei James Pretorius competed in the elite division (senior belts) and won silver for kumite.

Maree has now been selected to compete in Mozambique on 15 August and was also awarded his SA Development colours. Matthew and Nathan train under Sensei James Pretorius and Sensei Michael Thompson (both are third Dan black belts).
