Looking forward to a new SAPS commissioner

2015-07-22 06:00

WHEN the Marikana Report was released last week, it came as no surprise that it was recommended that the national police commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, be axed.

It was also no surprise to the citizens of our country.

Phiyega failed hopelessly by no fault of her own, but of the powers that sanctioned her appointment.

My hope is that the next police commissioner will be appointed from the rank and file of the police.

The person must have a properly obtained academic degree, have had basic police training and also walked the empty streets at night and driven in SAPS vehicles while attending to the various complaints lodged by people on the ground.

This will enable them to understand policing in this country fully.

The appointee’s fingerprints must be checked by the relevant laboratory, ensuring he or she has no criminal convictions.

His or her academic certificates must be verified to ensure there is no falsification. He or she must be a person beyond reproach.

Oscar Pistorius and Shrien Dewani got off scot-free due to a lack of proper police investigative skills.

Let this not be repeated in this country.

The SAPS is our first line of defence. Accordingly, we look forward to a polished and disciplined team.
