2015-07-29 06:00

DURING the early hours of Monday morning, members of the Brighton Beach Task Team and KwaMakhutha SAPS approached a vehicle with five occupants in the KwaMakhuta area. When the suspects spotted police they opened fire and drove off.

Police chased the vehicle and returned fire. The suspects lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a house. Three suspects fled the scene, while two were apprehended.

A 9mm pistol and five cellphones were found in the suspects’ possession. A case of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm was opened at the KwaMakhutha police station. The suspects, aged 18 and 24, are expected to appear in the Mbumbululu Magistrate’s Court soon on the charges.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police officers for keeping their cool while pursuing the suspects. “It is obvious these individuals were up to no good. Detectives will ensure they are profiled to establish whether they are wanted for other crimes in the province. “I am pleased that our police officers were not injured during the shoot-out.” - Supplied
