Water tanks for each home the answer

2015-10-14 06:00

ON a recent 5 000km tour through South Africa to Namaqualand, I was impressed by the way the government has rolled out solar geysers to the indigenous folk.

They were made I’m sure, in China. It cost the country a mint, but it certainly saved Eskom’s, and our bacon.

They now need to do the same with water tanks, except they could be made in South Africa.

We have large and small companies that would welcome huge orders to build them. Ideally they should be fibreglass tanks, because they have an indefinite life, and can be repaired if damaged, but they do cost more.

Taxpayers could get a rebate for their tanks, so imagine if every rural home with gutters received a free water tank.

The initiative would create employment for tens of thousands of people and no special technology is required.

There is absolutely no need for large cities such as Cape Town and Durban to have water restrictions.

South Africa receives more than enough rainfall for municipal areas.

All that’s needed are tanks and small reservoirs to store the water for the dry seasons.

With a small underground reservoir, filled from the roof in summer, we now use virtually no municipal water in our home and garden.

Luxurious showers and generous watering of the vegetables are the norm throughout the winter, and the quality of the water is remarkably good.
